What is a pomade?

Put simply, pomade is a word used to describe hair styling products that hold your hair in place. Traditionally, pomades have been thick styling products that add high levels of shine and would hold hair in place all day long. Now, pomades come in a lot of shapes and sizes, from lightweight matte pomades all the way through to products that draw inspiration from what your granddad used. One thing is for sure, finding the right pomade for your style is like winning the lottery.

Types of Pomade

The most traditional type of pomade is an oil-based pomade. Oil-based pomades offer high amounts of shine with a strong hold that can be reworked throughout the day. These pomades add a greasier texture to the hair and are ideal for classic looks. These types of pomade are a little harder to wash out, so make sure you choose a deep cleaning shampoo.

Water-based pomades hit the scene in the 2000s, and once they landed, barbers haven't looked back. Start with a small fingernail-sized scoop of your selected pomade and spread it across your hands until it is completely emulsified.

Next, rub your hands through your hair, ensuring you apply the pomade down to the roots. Now, style your hair for a looser look, or use a comb for a tight and tidy finish.
